Lakeside was
originally built by hard-working, hard-drinking people with vision. On
the site of an abandoned, flooded iron ore quarry they decided to build
their very own little village. While they lived in a shanty about the
size of a utility shed, they started the first home. Using old chestnut
telephone poles, used brick, fieldstone and whatever recycled materials
they could acquire cheaply, or free, they went on a building spree.
There are now 9 dwellings. Due to zoning and other land use issues,
there will be no more.
You can't
smell the creosote around you, but you always know it's there, waiting.
When you are first brought to Lakeside, you may well be sane, but there
is no hope after a while. The only treatment you get here is medication
& relaxation therapy. Eventually you realize, there is no way out of
this deep well. When you stop fighting it, the real fun begins.
These
cabins, in this location, are as rustic as it gets, but we're 5 minutes
from town and 20 minutes to the city. We are blessed with peace and
freedom, and we party like we'll live forever.
We toast
Frank and Violet for their vision, creativity and hard work, but mostly
we toast Bud, cause he taught us and we miss him.
